Midwife María García has issued an important warning via TikTok to all families, especially those where both parents smoke . In a recent video, García emphasized the need to raise awareness about the dangers of exposing babies to tobacco smoke and its derivatives.
"In many families where both fathers smoke, there is no full awareness of the risk," the midwife stated, noting that exposure to tobacco can have serious consequences for children's health. To mitigate these risks, she offered a series of recommendations that can be crucial.
@matrona_desde_dentro 🚭👶 Did you know that even if you don't smoke in front of your baby, they are still exposed to tobacco? In many families where both dads smoke, people aren't fully aware of the real risk: passive smoke, but also thirdhand smoke (yes, the kind that gets on your clothes, hair, hands, etc.). 💥 But BE CAREFUL: I've also seen smoking families who take it super seriously and do EVERYTHING possible to protect their baby. That also exists and deserves to be mentioned! 👏 This isn't about judging, it's about informing. Because protecting babies from smoke DOES make a difference from day one 🍼💛 #SmokeFreeBabies #SmokingAndBabies #SmokingParents #RealParenting #ChildHealth #ThirdHandSmoke #MotherhoodTips #ScientificParenting ♬ original sound - matrona_desde_dentro
One of García 's first recommendations is very clear: never smoke in the space where the baby will be . This includes places like the living room, the baby's room, or even the parents' own room, if the little one sleeps there. "If you've smoked, don't forget to wash your hands thoroughly before picking up the baby and changing the upper part of your clothes ," she emphasized. Tobacco substances, she warned, also remain on the skin and clothing.
The midwife also stressed the importance of avoiding smoking in the car if the baby is traveling in it, as well as preventing anyone from smoking near the child, especially if the smoke could reach the child due to the wind. These precautions, according to the expert, can reduce the baby's likelihood of suffering from problems such as childhood asthma, respiratory infections, ear infections, and even sudden infant death syndrome.

In addition to the recommendations, García took the opportunity to offer a motivational message to parents who smoke: "With all of this, it seems to me more than enough reason to at least try to quit smoking ." In this regard, he encouraged those who want to quit smoking to seek help, reminding them that the public health system offers numerous resources and programs designed to support those who need it.
With this awareness campaign, García not only seeks to raise awareness about the risks of tobacco, but also to provide parents with an opportunity to improve their health and that of their children by adopting healthier habits.
